This article is about one clear and cold night in the alps. – The Alps are a good place for watching the stars. On a long weekend in October the weather forecast was very good. So hiking was the best option for this weekend. The starting point was in the mountains not far from Bludenz, a city in Austria. The alpine huts (also the Totalphut) were already closed. So the tent was the only option. One night the tent was setup not far from the Schesaplana.

Clear sky at the Waltenberger Haus / Allgäu
The Waltenberherg Haus is (was) a very old mountain hut in the Allgäu Alps not far from Oberstdorf. When I was there the first time with my grandpa I was still a child. In the hut there are still very old alpine guest books from the time before and during World War II. Unfortunately it will be ripped off and rebuild in 2015.

Around new moon in September 2014 I visited Appartamenti Agrituristici Agribaldo (https://www.agribaldo.it) close to Lake Garda for a few days and nights.
They offer an apartment with kitchen, bath, bedroom, garden and a wide free area around the building for up to 4 persons for a fair price. But the most important thing is that is is pretty dark there. The good thing is that is is not far away from Lake Garda and depending on the weather you can decide if you want to spend your holiday at night watching the sky – or – at day with e.g. hiking, cycling or climbing.

May 2013 we visited La Palma again to do cycling, hiking and astrophotography. This short video shows some of our best moments. The time-lapse videos were recorded using a Canon G15 with a CHDK “patch”.

This evening the weather was supposed to be good. So I decided to go up to the Roque de Los Muchachos with my rented equipment to do some astrophotography. As usual things are not as easy with unfamiliar equipment end as always the devil lies in the detail. However, I did some testing before and so I was confident that it is going to work.
